Occupation: Miner. William Martin Oates (1820-1904)
William Martin Oates married Mary Anne Sprague and had a family of three boys and five girls. The first four children were probably born in the parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall. Although he worked as a superintendent of copper mines in Jamaica and Italy before coming to Australia so some of his children may have been born in these countries.
An older brother of William's, George Merrick Oates (b ~1807) came out to South Australia in 1849 with his wife and two children. He was a farmer at Port Wakefield, his son Phillip Merrick Oates was a miner and farmer. Details are in the Biographical Index of South Australians.
This brother could have attracted William to Australia. Although the fact that the family moved quickly to Beechworth and within two years William was a shareholder together with Joseph Hollow in the MvEvoy mine suggests they may have been encouraged to Australia by the Hollows or their acquaintances.
William, Mary and four children, George(7), Eliza(5), Mary(2) and an infant daughter, arrived in Adelaide aboard the "Royal Albert" on 29th March 1857. they travelled to Beechworth via river boat up the Murray to Wahgunyah taking twelve weeks, then they spent another three weeks travelling by horse team from there to Spring Creek. William Oates secured a claim at Pennyweight Flat and worked it for eighteen months before moving to Eldorado and the McEvoy mine.
William's wife Mary Ann died aged 45 years in 1865.
William was born at Kenwyn, CON, ENG, , in 1819. He was baptized on 19 September 1819 at Kea, CON, ENG, .1 He married Mary Ann Sprague at Kenwyn, CON, ENG, , on 22 March 1849.2,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census at Saveock Water, St Clement, CON, ENG, . William Martin Oates obituary, father of Eliza, wife of Joseph Hollow Junior. - Wangaratta Chronicle 1904
Mr W.M. Oates, died August 23rd 1904 at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. J. Hickey (Wangaratta).
The late Mr. Oates, who was 84 years of age, was one of the oldest pioneers of the Ovens goldfields.
Born at Savake Water, Cornwall, England in 1820, after spending a number of years in Italy and Jamaica, where he had been sent by an English Syndicate to superintend copper mines, which is the principal mining in the land of his birth, he set sail for Australia, arriving in Adelaide with his wife and family in 1857.
They soon started of for the Ovens goldfields. The only means of transit in those days being by boat up the Murray river as far as Wargunyah.
The journey was slow and tedious, some days the only distance travelled would be only one mile as the crow flies, this being due to the numerous bends in the river.
The young men passengers often amused themselves with various games, catching the boat again at a bend further up the river and usually watched by natives who were along the river bank.
The journey to Wahgunyah took 12 weeks and then a further 3 weeks by horse team to Spring Creek (as Beechworth was then called).
Mr. Oates soon secured a claim at Pennyweight Flat and mined here for a while, but after approximately 18 months he moved to Eldorado, joining a party of 16 who took up the claim that is widely known as the "McEvoy", well known not only for its gold (11 tons), but later for the disaster when 6 men were buried at the mine.
Out of the 16 original shareholders, only 5 are now left, and they followed the hearse to the Eldorado cemetery.
They are M. O'Neill (Nth. Wangaratta) and Messrs Hollow, Bawden, Raby and Davey of Eldorado.
The deceased leaves 1 son Mr. W.J. Oates (Beechworth) and 4 daughters, Mrs. Visick, Mrs Lemin ( Rutherglen), Mrs John Hickey ( Wangaratta), Mrs Joseph Hollow (Eliza Jane) also a widowed daughter Mrs. Oates with whom the deceased had been residing, she being the youngest of the family.
There are also 22 Grand children and 8 Great Grand children.
Thos. Laidlaw, Wangaratta having charge of the funeral arrangements.
