William Huxtable

M, b. 1821, d. 27 June 1881
William Huxtable was born in 1821 at Bideford, DEV, ENG, .

William Huxtable, migrated to Australia (Port Philip) aboard the "Berkshire" leaving Liverpool on 3 October 1848. He was then aged 26 years and upon arrival in Australia he was employed by Oliphant ROBINSON of Kubbeabbot, Port Philip. This is now believed to be the Port Arlington area. At the time of his arrival in Australia William Huxtable was a farm servant, who could read and write and was of Episcopal religion. He was employed for a period of 3 years at a wage of 20 Pounds and rations.

It is quite evident that he worked well for, only approximately thirty months after his arrival he married on 7 January 1851 Catherine Francis MOYLE, born Cornwall, England in 1826. She had migrated to Australia on 11 November 1848 aboard the "Nelson" and she was employed as a house servant. She was a Bible Christian and could read and write. Both William and Catherine were apparently well known during their life at Port Philip as they are referred to many times in records of the Port Arlington Methodist Church. Catherine's parents were Jessie MOYLE, believed to have been a Master Mariner, and Hannah MOYLE nee HART. They were married in The Manse, at Geelong, Victoria.

William and Catherine had a family of thirteen children the first being born on 1 December 1850 and the last on 17 Oct 1870. These dates are from the Huxtable family Bible. The last born, William Henry Huxtable 17 Oct 1870 was the writer's (Bruce Huxtable) grandfather.

After working in the Port Arlington area for a number of years William and Catherine amassed a large amount of farming property in that area as maps of early settling days show that they had approximately one hundred and fifty acres of land in their name. They also had several building allotments in the town proper during this time. They built a family home in High Street, Port Arlington.

William died on 27 June 1881 and was buried at Port Arlington and a grave and large headstone was erected by his beloved wife to his memory. That grave still stands and is in excellent condition, work having been done to restore portions that needed renovation. After his death it seems that Catherine sold most of the land owned by William and she then had another home built on the Esplanade not far from the old mill. Catherine died at Port Arlington on 3 October 1896 and is also buried in the same grave.

He married Catherine Moyle on 12 January 1851 at Geelong, VIC, AUS. William Huxtable died on 27 June 1881 at PortArlington, VIC, AUS.

Mary Ann McCreedy

F, b. 1835, d. 21 June 1914
Mary Ann McCreedy was born in 1835 at Newtonstewart, Tyrone, IRE, . She emigrated on 9 November 1849 from Plymouth, DEV, ENG, , Ship, Derwent, arrived Melbourne 25 Feb 1850.1

Mary McCreedy left Plymouth, England on the 9th November 1849 on the barque Derwent. She was 15 years old. Other details from records show she was a Roman Catholic, and may not have been able to read or write, there is a discrepancy between different records on this point. Mary’s home is listed as Newtonstuart, Galway but the village of Newtonstewart is actually in county Tyrone.
The Derwent sailed from Plymouth and took 112 days to reach Melbourne. There were 154 passengers, 139 of whom were classed as ‘female orphans from Ireland’. They were aged between 14 and 20 from the northern counties of Ireland and few could either read or write
Once in Melbourne was received into the Immigration Depot on 4th March 1850 and left there on 9th March. She was engaged as an Apprentice by William Ashby, a dealer, of Little Lonsdale Street for two years, wages £6 per annum. Her role would have been as a house servant.
Mary was one of 4,114 young women who came to Australia during the Irish Famine years of 1848 to 1850. The girls were orphans and came from workhouses from all 32 counties of Ireland. All were destitute and many had lost their parents and families, so were 'orphans' in the modern sense of the word. Others were simply unable to support themselves within the family. The term 'orphan', meaning loss of at least one parent, did apply to the vast majority of the 4114. These girls came to Australia under Earl Grey’s Famine Orphan Scheme. Under this scheme workhouses were encouraged to find inmates between 14 and 18 willing to come to Australia. Part of the rationale was to try to correct the imbalance of women and men in Australia at the time. It was hoped these young marriageable women who would bring a stabilising influence to rough masculine colonial societies. The scheme ended in July 1850.

As of 1852, Mary Ann McCreedy was also known as Mc Cready. As of 1852,her married name was Milsom. She married Thomas Milsom in 1852. Mary Ann McCreedy died on 21 June 1914 at Knowsley, VIC, AUS; The death occurred at Knowsley (where she had been residing with one of her daughter's), Mrs Mary Milsom, widow of the late Mr Thomas Milsom.
The deceased, who had reached the advanced age of 81 years, was born in England and had been 70 years in Victoria. Death took place after only 14 days' illness, the cause being bronchial pneumonia and heart failure. She had also been the victim of almost entire absence of vision for about eight years. Mrs Milsom was married at Kilmore when 17 years of age, her husband, having predeceased her many years. One son is also deceased, and there are living ten daughters and three sons to mourn their sad loss.
The funeral took place on Tuesday and was largely attended, the place of interment being the Heathcote cemetery. The burial service was read by the Rev. W. M. Madgwick and the funeral was conducted by Messrs. Perry Bros.
