Our Raywood correspondent writes:— It is with extreme regret that I have to announce the death of two of our oldest residents. One is Mrs. Janet Webster, wife of Mr. Arthur Webster, a very old resident of Neilborough. The deceased lady had been ailing for some time, and passed away peacefully on Friday. Before coming to Raywood the deceased lady, with her husband and brother-in-law, the late James Webster, resided at Huntly, where in the olden days they were very successful in mining, having had one of the first crushing plants near Epsom.

OBITUARY.
The death is announced of one of the oldest pioneers of the Bendigo district, in the person of Mr. Arthur Webster, of Neilborough, at the advanced age of 87 years. The deceased gentleman, in the early days, along with his four brothers, had a claim on the famous Epsom lead, and later on at Huntly, where they were amongst the luckiest diggers. Some 30 years ago deceased, with his brother James, shifted their battery to Neilborough, where for many years they worked on the Deep Lead with varying success. James, unfortunately, was killed by falling down a shaft. Mr. Arthur Webster, despite his great age, took much interest in politics, he and his brother James being strong supporters of the late Sir John McIntyre and the late Mr Angus Mackay. A large family of grown-up children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren survives.

Obituary
HANSEN.— On the 11th March, at 5 Thomas-street. North Williamstown, Mary, dearly beloved wife of August William Hansen, and dearly beloved daughter of Arthur and Janet Webster, of Neilborough, late of Huntley, Bendlgo, aged 33 year 10 months. A patient sufferer gone to rest.
The Age, 13 March 1899. She was buried after 11 March 1899 at Williamstown Cemetery, Williamstown, VIC, AUS.2
Mary Webster married August Hansen at Epsom in 1887; the Hansen’s lived at 5 Thomas Street, Williamstown, their first child was born there in 1888. The Hansen’s had six children but family life was shattered in 1899 by the deaths of Mary and two of her children in 1899. Mary was not yet 34. In 1899 her son Frederick died on Feb. 20 aged 7, her new born daughter died Mar 9 and Mary died Mar 11. The bereavement notice tells the story.
There are two photographs of the Hansen family. The first portrait looks more like a painting than a photograph. It was identified as the Hanson family by Carrie Hollow and I have no reason to doubt it. The children correspond to the Hanson children in number and ages. Mary Hanson (Webster) died after childbirth in 1899. The photographer, Edward Sands of Williamstown was known to operate in from 1896 to 1898. The photograph therefore could have been taken before Mary’s demise in 1899.) Alternatively the portrait may be a simulated one created after Mary’s death minus the newborn baby that passed away at the same time. Mary’s dress is that of the 1890s with the full sleeves. The dead Frederick would correspond to the boy in the strange chair. The youngest child at her death was a boy, Arthur Webster Hanson, born 1896.
Mary’s husband was August Hansen and he appears in the next photo, but there are two adult males and the dress suggests early 1900s so the women cannot be August’s wife Mary. The children would appear to be August’s with Frederick missing. Are the men brothers? The wife may be a Webster but I am not sure which one it could be.

Elizabeth married Thomas Michael Downey in Deniliquin, N.S.W. on 25th April 1883. His name was recorded as Downey, sometimes that spelling was used sometimes Downie. In the end Downie became the favoured spelling. Although based mainly in Deniliquin the family must have moved around. The first child, Elizabeth was born in Deniliquin in 1883, the second child, Arthur was born in Collingwood, Victoria in 1889. Next child Harry was born back in Deniliquin in 1892, then our Nana, Dorothy, was born in Hay, N.S.W. in 1896. Hay is about 120 km north of Deniliquin. Jane (1898), Ruby (1900) and Les(1905) were born in Deniliquin, The last child, Bill, claimed Deniliquin as his birthplace although his birth was registered in Victoria in 1909.
In 1909 Elizabeth is listed in the Victorian Electoral roll as living at Neilborough and continued to be recorded there in Electoral Rolls until her death in 1931.
The registration of the children is irregular.
1883 Elizabeth Jean Downey father Michael, mother Elizabeth at Deniliquin, NSW
1889 Arthur Downey father Thomas mother Elizabeth at Collingwood, VIC
1892 Elizabeth Downie father Thomas mother Elizabeth at Deniliquin, NSW (this must be Henry Francis (Harry)
1896 Dorothy M Downie father Thomas mother Elizabeth at Hay, NSW
1898 Jane E B Webster father not recorded mother Elizabeth at Deniliquin, NSW died 1899.
1900 Ruby M Downie father not recorded mother Elizabeth at Deniliquin, NSW
1905 Leslie M Downie father not recorded mother Elizabeth at Deniliquin, NSW
1909 William Sheppard Downie father not recorded mother Elizabeth Victoria
We know the marriage broke down, what we don’t know is when that happened. That is where the mystery is. The fact that Elizabeth registered her baby Jane as Jane E B Webster in 1898 may indicate that the marriage broke down then. From this time onwards Elizabeth did not include the father’s name on any of her children’s birth registrations.
Some of The Downie children were reputed to be brought up by the Hoskins family in Deniliquin. But when you analyse it by 1909, when we know she was in Neilborough, the older children were capable of looking after themselves. Liz had probably left home she would have been 26 in 1909; Arthur would have been 20 and had a child himself. Leaving Harry at 17 and probably decided to stay in Deniliquin rather than move to Neilborough.
The only Hoskins in Deniliquin at the time were Edward and Sarah Hoskins and in 1895 an E Hoskins was the publican at the White Lion Hotel in End St. Deniliquin. Harry probably stayed there. The relationship however must have been strong as Harry actually took the name Hoskins. One of his children, Frank, was told that he was really a Downie by our Mum, Carrie. He was also surprised when applying for a passport to find his birth certificate was different to what he imagined. Arthur retained the name Downie.
The Photograph collection
It seems the album of belonged to Elizabeth Webster then was added to by Nana. Elizabeth was known in the family as Lizzie, her daughter Elizabeth was also Liz (Liz Irvine) which complicates interpreting messages etc written on the photos. Elizabeth had a large collection of photos some may be as early as the 1860s. Nana was also keen on photos; there are many studio photos of her children from babies on, often studio photos. Mum continued this and was a photographer herself. This interest has continued in Dot and Joanna. Their interest has a long history amongst the women of this family. In contrast to the Hollow side where photos of the early Hollows vis Dad’s parents are very scant.
