Judd—Wintour
A quiet but pretty wedding took place at St. James' Church of England, Tongala, on Wednesday, October 28, when the marriage of Miss Dorothy Maude Wintour, third daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Wintour, of "Roseleigh," Tongala, and Mr Arthur Judd, second son of the late Mr: judd and Mrs Crapper, Shamrock Hotel, Neilsborough, was solemnized by the Rev G. E. Roper.
The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in, a pastel, shaded pink gowen of silk net and lace over taffeta, the matching veil being held in place by a spray ot pink camelias, and she carried a bouquet of tiger lilies and maiden hair fern.Mrs L.L. Smith (sister of the bride) attended as matron of honor in-a frock of pale blue silk net over taffeta and Mr John Darveniza of Mooroopna, acted as best man. The Rev. Roper presided over the family gathering and twenty-seven . telegrams of congratulation were read, including one from the bride's brother Dick, who is in the Middle East. The two-tier wedding cake was made, by 'the bridegroom's mother. The usual toasts were honored. For travelling the bride chose a brown suit with lemon tonings. The future, home of Mr and Mrs A. Judd will be at Mooroopna.
Riverine Herald Saturday 7 November 1942. Arthur Judd died on 14 August 1988 at Mooroopna, VIC, AUS, at age 70.

Henry Cope

Henry Downey’s parentage is unproven; what I have included here is an interpretation of information that has been found to date.
The fact that Henry Downey and Bridget Newell had children including my great grandfather Michael Thomas Downey is proven by records. It is Henry's parentage that is unclear. A breakthrough came when a family member discovered records of a Tasmanian convict named Henry Cope. Henry was convicted at the old Bailey of thieving and sentenced to seven years transportation to Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania) in 1832. Henry was sixteen when convicted, so born around 1816. Records show his native place was Westminster, Middlesex.
After being released with a Freedom Certificate Henry changed his name from Cope to Downey. Searching for a Henry Cope or a Henry Downey born or baptised around 1816 in Middlesex came up with a Henry Downey and a Henry Coope and both have links to the name Downey.
Henry Coope, baptised at St Margaret’s Westminster, Middlesex on 26 Nov 1815, born 1 Nov 1815 to John and Maria Coope. John was recorded as a mason living at Palmer’s Village.
A further search came up with a marriage record for a John Coope and Maria Downey. They were married on July fourteenth 1805 at St George, Hanover Square, London, Westminster, England. John made his mark, Maria signed the record. John’s occupation was recorded as mason.
There are several pointers to this being our Henry Cope. Dropping an O in his surname could have been common when the non reading or writing John Coope was giving his name to officialdom. Henry was a mason when first convicted. His father was a mason and it would not be surprising that his sixteen year old son worked in the same profession. He seems to have changed his name when he went to Adelaide after being granted a Freedom Certificate. A new name for a new start. Choosing his mother’s maiden name would seem a choice he may have made. Henry Cope/Downey’s native place was always referred to as Westminster in his convict records. There are many Maria Downeys born in Ireland, it may explain why Henry was known as a Roman Catholic in the convict records.
However:
There was a Henry Downey born at a similar time and place. There is a baptism record for a Henry Downey, born 14/12/1816 and baptised at St James Church of England, Westminster on 28/12/1816. His parents were Francis and Maria Downey, Francis was a plumber.
This scenario is attractive in that Francis and Maria are names that are found in Henry and Bridget’s family in the next generation and further generations. The dates and locality fit the data from convict records.
This scenario has a couple of problems, Francis was a plumber, and we might expect his young son to follow his profession. Secondly, would a sixteen year old give a false name when arrested for a pickpocketing offence? Also why would he pick the name Cope?
There are other Henry Copes and Henry Downeys, as well as sets of parents, to follow up on but these two are the best possibilities at the moment. The fact that the name Maria is in both families could mean the two families were related. Francis and Maria may have been siblings. I have not found any evidence that this is the case though.
It will need further research to prove this story is correct but it fits the data so far.
As of 3 October 1832, Henry Cope was also known as Henry Cope. He was convicted for stealing, one handkerchief, value 3 shillings at Middlesex Gaol Delivery and sentenced to transportation for a term of 7 years on 18 October 1832 at The Old Bailey, London, LND, ENG, .2 He, a convict, was deported from England on 20 May 1833. On the ship Jupitor.3
He was granted a Ticket of Freedom in 1844 at Hobart Town, TAS, AUS. A reference to his free Certificate is found on 1845 Convict Record written when he was retransported from Adelaide in 1845. It contains a summary of his previous record which ends with the words 'Free Certificate No 51 1844.4
He was convicted with six others for coining half crowns. Sentence 10 years transportation. on 10 March 1845 at Adelaide, S.A., AUS.5
Around 10 March 1845 his name changed to Henry Downey. First referred to as Henry Downer alias Henry Cope in Adelaide newspaper reports. The name Henry Downey was used for the remainder of his sentence in Hobart and he seems to have used it for the rest of his life. He was granted a Ticket of Leave on 17 June 1850 at Hobart Town, TAS, AUS.6,7
He and Bridget Newell obtained a marriage license on 15 August 1851 at Hobart Town, TAS, AUS.8
He married Bridget Newell circa September 1851. Henry Cope was granted a Conditional Pardon on 11 January 1853 at Hobart Town, TAS, AUS.9
They emigrated, on 26 July 1855from at Hobart Town, TAS, AUS, aboard the ship Tasmania bound for Sydney, N.S.W. Henry and Bridget had two children at this time, Mary Ann about 2 yo and Martin only one. They may have been too young to be recorded on the manifest..10 He died after 1869.

The aged man James Webster, who was severely injured on Tuesday through falling a distance of 120ft down as alluvial shaft on the Neilborough Deep lead, died in the hospital at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. He was unconscious| when admitted to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and remained so up to the time of his death. He was a very old and well known identity, having arrived with his three brothers in 1852 They at one time owned the Caledonian Crushing Battery at Epsom and later on they owned a battery at Huntly. He was 70 years old and unmarried. Two of his brothers survive him. Both live at Elysian Flat, one being 72 and the other 74 year: of age. They have always worked together as mates and from time to time have been pretty successful. Their last lucky hit was the finding of a 70oz nugget at Elysian flat. The funeral will take place on Friday from Elysian Flat to the Raywood Cemetery. An inquest will be held at the hospital this morning at 11. o'clock.
