PENZANCE MAN'S DEATH In AKRON, U.S.A.
Much regret was felt in the Cornish Colony at Akron, U.S.A., at the news of the death of Mr. Walter Hollow, of 57, Hart Place, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hollow, formerly of Penzance. The late Mr. Hollow had been a resident of Akron for twenty-two years, was extremely well known and very highly respected, a man of sterling character and sincerity of purpose, a noble example of patience, fortitude and serene hopefulness which commands the greatest admiration.
The deceased had been in failing health for a long time, and his medical advisers decided upon an operation, which took place at the City Hospital on Tuesday, March 16th, but in spite of every care and attention he passed away on Wednesday, March 16th.
The funeral took place on Saturday, March 19th, at East Akron cemetery and was conducted at the house by the Rev. W. Hubor, of the First Presbyterian Church, of which deceased was a member, and at the graveside by Akron Masonic Lodge 83, and owing to the inclemency of the weather, a large funeral Was not expected, but Walter's personality was touch stronger than the discomfiture of the rain and resulted In one of the largest Cornish funerals ever assembled in Akron. One can imagine that with such a gathering of Cornish people, the famous old funeral hymns, "O, God our help in ages past" and "Lead kindly light.'" were rendered very appropriately.
The mourners were Mrs. Walter Hollow (widow). Misses Edna, Irene, Gladys and Gwendoline Hollow (daughters), Mr. and Mrs. George Hollow, sen. (father and mother), Mr. and Mrs. George Hollow, jun. (brother and sister-in-law), Mrs. E A. Williams (sister). Mr. and Mrs. W. J- Wallis (sister and brother-in-law). Mr. and Mrs. L. Hollow (brother and sister-in-law) Mr. and Mrs. P. Hollow (brother and sister-in-law), Messrs. James, Leonard, Garfield and Frank Williams (nephews), and Misses Ethel Williams, Dorothy, and Vera Wallis (nieces).
The Cornishman 27 April 1927.
Walter was the first of the Hollows to 'chance his hand' in America and first arrived in New York on 9 April 1905, aged 18 years, aboard the SS. New York from Southampton to stay with his brother-in-law James Williams at 178 S.Market Street, Akron, Ohio. He returned to Cornwall in 1907 in order to bring his father to the USA. He made a further trip to England in 1914. Walter was described as being of dark complexion with black hair and brown eyes and was 5' 8'' tall.
Occupation - Gardener.
