HENRY MORRIS—RAILWAY MAN.
One of the oldest (if not the oldest), hands on the Big Mine was Henry Morris n charge of the railway gang. He died only a few months back(sic), but for mental vigour and alertness (especially with fists) he was not to be beaten by the younger ones. He was an historian of the progress of the locomotive having been "boy" to George Stephenson at the time he ran his famous "Comet" and many a rattling yarn spin of his master. Old Henry could neither read nor write till he was sixteen. Through saving Stephenson from being run over by his own engines he roused the great man's interest, and the grand locomotive inventor made time even amongst all his multifarious duties and interests to teach old Henry the three R's. Stephenson's interest in humanity was always one of his greatest virtues and it seems to link with the long past to have talked with a man to whom this side of his character was so ungrudgingly opened.

Death. — Mrs. Sarah yesterday morning received word that her brother — Mr. T, Hallo— had expired at his residence, South Yarra, the previous evening. The cause of death was Bright's disease. The deceased, who was employed in the General Post Office, Melbourne, was highly esteemed by his confreres, and occupied the position of President of the Federated Letter Carriers' Association. Two years ago, when the appeal board was constituted, Mr. Hallo was elected by a large majority to represent the general division of the whole of the Public Service, and so pleased were his colleagues with the result that they had the requisition — which had been presented to him to consent to be nominated, and containing over 400 signatures— framed and also the result of the poll, and presented it to Mr. Hallo.
