WELLFLEET - James T. Lay, 92, a retired Navy captain, died Thursday at his home in Wellfleet.
He was the husband of Catherine Nimitz Lay for 57 years.
Born in St. Clair, Mo., he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1983. During World War II, he served with distinction in the Pacific theater with the 3rd Amphibious Force. He saw action at the Aleutian Islands, Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf.
After the war, Capt. Lay held several commands, the last being the guided missile cruiser USS Helena, flagship of the 7th Fleet. Other assignments include work with the Bureau of Ordnance and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at the Pentagon.
After retiring from the Navy, he worked with Raytheon at its Submarine Signal Division in Portsmouth, R.I. He retired and moved to Wellfleet in 1972.
Surviving besides his wife are three sons, James T. Lay Jr. of Blue Hill, Maine, Chester N. Lay of Brewster and Richard F. Lay of Wellfleet; a sister, Elizabeth Murray of St. Clair, Mo; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are private.

WELLFLEET - James T. Lay, 92, a retired Navy captain, died Thursday at his home in Wellfleet.
