John
Holla was born circa 1480. He was the named in a document circa 1500 at
Madron, CON, ENG, . The document pertained to the detention of deeds relating to a messuage and garden in Pensans. Cornwall.
2,3 This John Holla seems to be the oldest Holla to appear in records.
A document in the U.K. National Archives at Kew, Reference: C 1/208/31, and from the period 1493-1500 refers to this John Holla. There seems to be no date on the document so it could have been written up to seven years earlier than 1500.
The document is a Chancery pleading addressed to the Cardinal Arch Bishop of Canterbury as Lord Chancellor seeking to obtain the deeds of a messuage and garden in Penzance that John Holla argues is rightfully his.
There is a similar document involving another defendant, John John Pascowe, this from the period 1486-1493, or 1504-1515, and seeking to obtain the deeds of presumably another messuage in Penzance.
This suggests John Holla may have acquired two properties in these periods.
In 1524/25 a John Holla of Madron appears on the Subsidy rolls taken in that period but more probably it would have been the original John Holla’s son. There is also a Thomas Holla listed, possibly another son.
In this period the names of people paying tax were entered on a roll and were allocated an amount they had to pay to support military campaigns in France, Scotland and Wales. The Great Subsidy of 1524-5 lists all people over the age of 16 years with income from land or with taxable goods worth £2 per annum, or with annual wages of £1 or more.
The original John Holla having at least two properties and would have been classed as a yeoman. He was the named in a document circa 1515 at Penzance, CON, ENG, . The document pertained to the detention of deeds relating to a messuage and garden in Penzance, Cornwall.4,5 He was listed in the Military Survey of Cornwall in 1524 at Madron, CON, ENG, .6 He died circa 1550.1
